Brian Charette, just announced 5th in the Downbeat Critic's Poll, is the epitome of a successful and consummate music artist. His foray into music began with his mother; then he turned teen piano prodigy --playing with jazz luminaries Lou Donaldson and Houston Person at the age of 17. Upon graduating in the Dean's List from UConn in 1994 with a BA in Music, Brian performed and toured extensively in Europe and the USA. And yet he established a home base in the East Village, NYC, where Brian is a staple of the downtown NYC scene working with virtually everyone who plays with an organist. Sheer talent stands out from the crowd. Hence Brian has elevated on to the big stage, performing with the likes of superstar artists like Joni Mitchell, Chaka Khan, Paul Simon, Cyndi Lauper, and many more. Most recently, Brian has worked with Miles Davis alumnus, George Coleman and Allman Brother's Band Drummer, Jaimoe. With a resume such as this, awards and accolades follow. Along with his Grammy nomination, Brian is the winner of the 2014 Downbeat Critics’ Poll Rising Star: Organ award and has climbed to 4th place in The Critic's Poll main organ category. In 2015 Brian also won The Hot House Magazine's Fan's Decision Jazz Award for Best Organist in New York. His last Positone Records recording, Once and Future, reached #17 on the Jazz Week chart and was also on the Itunes new music Top 20.
And as if these were not enough, Brian is an active author and educator, writing for Keyboard magazine, New York City Jazz Record, DownBeat, and the Czech magazine Muzikus. With the overflow of talent, the purpose for teaching follows. He teaches master classes all over the world and is on the faculty of the Czech Summer Jazz Workshop at Jesek Conservatory in Prague. He also wears a book author hat, having his first book, 101 Hammond B3 Tips, released through publisher Hal Leonard, has become very popular, as well as his video on the website, mymusicmasterclass.com.
So what does he do after all in a day's work? Brian is passionate about chess and White Crane kung fu, in which he holds a black sash.
